Sump pumps and backwater valves in Guelph

Basement flooding in Guelph and Wellington County comes from two directions: groundwater rising under the slab, and the municipal sewer backing up through the floor drain during a downpour. A sump pump handles the first. A backwater valve handles the second. Plenty of finished basements have only one — or an original pump that has never been tested.
We replace pumps with properly sized units, install check valves so the discharge line doesn't drain back into the pit, run discharge to where it won't freeze or flood the neighbour, and add battery backup pumps for homes where the power tends to go out with the storm.
Backwater valve installation means opening the slab at the main drain, setting the valve with access for inspection, and restoring the floor. It's a permitted job, and we handle the permit.

Straight answers
How do I know if my sump pump works?
Pour a bucket of water into the pit. The pump should start, drain the pit and stop within seconds without rattling. If it hesitates, runs continuously or hasn't run in years, have it looked at before the spring melt.
Do I need a backwater valve?
If your basement floor drain has ever backed up during a storm, or your street has a history of sewer surcharging, yes. Some municipalities in the region offer subsidies for installation — ask when you call and we'll tell you what applies to your address.
Does a backwater valve need a permit?
Yes — in Ontario it's a permitted plumbing alteration. We take care of the permit and the inspection as part of the job.
